Kunekune pigs!
2019 saw our farm add some new critters.....pigs! Our start was with some kunekune x AGH (American Guinea Hog) piglets and a bred Kunekune percentage sow. These animals just seemed to fit in with our farm from the start. It wasn't long and we started our search for some fullblood Kunekunes.
Kunekunes (Pronounced "koo-nee koo-nee,") are a breed of pigs that was founded in New Zealand, and kept by the Maori people. Kunekunes were once on the brink of extinction. They are a grazing breed of pigs and can successfully gain on grass alone, noted by some to be the only true pasture pig breed. They are known for their extremely laid back, docile, sweet personalities. This makes them very easy to handle, and ideal for homesteaders or those with small acreages. They have an upturned snout that prevents them from rooting and testing fences...another huge plus for those wanting just a few pigs on their homestead. Kunekunes are also known for having 2 wattles, one attached on each side of neck area.
Kunekunes mature smaller than traditional hogs, and mature a bit slower. But the meat is totally worth the wait. They produce a rich red, marbled meat. This pork is very flavorful and actually preferred by many chefs. And since they are a breed that is handled easily, it makes a great option for someone wanting to raise their own pork for the freezer.
We now have several fullblood Kunekunes, and have become quite smitten with their sweet personalities. We raise several litters a year and piglets are often available for sale at weaning. We currently have a few high percentage kunekune sows as well, so will offer a limited number of high percentage Kunekune piglets as well. We do vaccinate, and deworm our pigs as needed. If you have questions or interest in these pigs please let us know.
